ADAM IS STILL SLEEPING

By
Odete Martins Bigote

The story of creation is described in Genesis, the 1st book of the Bible.
Besides creating heaven and earth, God also created a man out of the dust of the
ground. But the man was "lifeless" until God gave him "the breath of life,"
that is, His spirit. God called him Adam, and as described in Genesis 2:21
"caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept." Then, He took one of the
man's ribs and made a woman. He named her Eve. Now, in the year 2004, we can
say that this is also the story of the first transplant of DNA.

It looks like God gave Adam such a strong overdose of anesthesia that
nowhere in the Bible says he woke up. Since we are all Adam's descendants, it is
logical to assume that mankind has been sleeping since then.

Like Adam, we do not remember that spirit has been implanted in us in the
form of "the breath of life." Like Adam, we are dreaming a dream structured by a
Higher Intelligence which the Bible calls, God. In this dream, Adam's first
sentence after he sees Eve must have been "At last." He felt lonely and
realized he needed another body to complement him. He focused on his body,
instead of his spirit, in other words, he looked "outward," instead of "inward."
And so was the beginning of mankind's dream on earth.

A relationship between Adam and Eve started. Sex and conflict followed. Many
eons went by, and conflicts never stopped. The earth is full of people
trying to destroy the human spirit.

By the time Moses got involved in the Exodus, about 1140 BC, there were 2
Million people that followed him out of slavery in Egypt, through the Sinai
Desert on their journey back to Canaan, later known as Israel.

Why did God choose to keep these people in a desert for 40 years? Why didn't
he choose a tropical forest with plenty of water, trees, fruit, birds,
animals and good shades?

The scenario God chose was the best for us to grow and wake-up: a process
that is still going on. It is when our needs really hurt us that we give in, and
hopefully start to awake. The Egyptian king, known as Pharaoh, endured many
plagues which devastated his country and his people but he still did not allow
to Jewish slaves to go free. It was only when his first born son was killed
that he finally let them go. The Pharaoh played games with God unaware that
God was testing his faith, and his willingness to change and awake. In Exodus
7:3 God says: And I will harden Pharaoh's heart and multiply my signs and my
wonders in the land of Egypt.

OBVIOUSLY, THIS HIGHER INTELLIGENCE IS OUR CAUSE, AND IS IN COMMAND.

There is no water in the desert. People protested and complained to Moses.
They wanted to go back to slavery. God told Moses to strike a rock with his
rod, and water appeared. Then, they complained about lack of food; God sent them
manna, a substance to make food with, and quails. While God took care of
them, He also gave them laws to live by.

THE DESERT, THEN, IS NOTHING BUT A SYMBOL OF THE EMPTINESS INSIDE OURSELVES
WHICH CAN EASILY BE REPLACED WITH GREAT FRUITS WHEN WE ALLOW SPIRIT TO HELP
US.

As the preparations for their journey to Canaan were going on, Moses begged
God to come with them. But God said that he could not go because He'd kill
them since they had misbehaved, that is, sinned.

This Great Energy, this Great Intelligence that we call God, knows that He
is always within us in the form of spirit; but God also knows that, at that
time, people were not ready, and most of us, today, are still not ready to
understand life this way. So, He comes down to our level and tells Moses that He is
sending an Angel with them to protect them and keep them company. God also
knows that we cannot destroy spirit, therefore, there is no death. What happens
at the moment we call death, is that spirit goes on to another journey, while
the physical body seems to enter into a deep sleep but, like we were told
when Adam was created: "it is lifeless" as the breath of life has gone.

WE DO NOT NEED A BODY TO BE SPIRIT, BUT WE NEED SPIRIT TO HELP US PLAY THE
ROLE OF A DREAMER AND AWAKE.

During those 40 years in the Sinai Desert, and in spite of people's
misunderstandings, God never stopped sending them miracles to help them wake up to
His great Energy, recognize His power and get stimulated enough to ask for His
help.

His miracles have gone as far as sending us another image of himself in the
form of a physical body known as Jesus Christ; but that was about 1500 years
after Exodus.

As we choose to allow our dream to go on, God continues to protect us. His
love for us is always going on, and so is His smile, as He watches us, even
when we misbehave.
